15.6-inch Industrial LCD Selection: LVDS vs eDP

A 15.6-inch diagonal and Full HD resolution do not make two LCD modules interchangeable. This guide separates size requirements from interface, electrical, mechanical, optical, environmental and lifecycle checks so engineering and purchasing teams can shortlist panels without assuming drop-in compatibility.

Choose the host interface before choosing the panel

Confirm whether the controller provides native LVDS or native eDP. A connector with the same number of pins does not prove protocol or pin-map compatibility. LVDS channel count, bit mapping and clocking must match. eDP lane count, link rate, AUX channel, panel power sequence and backlight controls must also match.

Mechanical and optical checks

  • Compare the complete outline, active area, depth, mounting holes and connector location.
  • Confirm brightness against real ambient light, cover lens, air gap or optical bonding.
  • Verify viewing angle, surface treatment, color requirement and touch-stack effect.
  • Check cable routing and service access inside the actual enclosure.

Temperature, backlight and power risks

Wide-temperature panel ratings do not automatically qualify the complete HMI. Review panel power, backlight input, driver integration, PWM and enable logic, heat dissipation, cold start, enclosure temperature and long-run luminance degradation.

Purchasing and lifecycle advice

Include the original label, full model suffix, controller and cable, target interface, required brightness and temperature, annual quantity, immediate demand, destination and required date. Qualify samples on the actual host before changing an approved model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 15.6-inch LVDS panel be replaced by an eDP panel?

Not directly in most systems. LVDS and eDP use different protocols and normally require a different controller or an active conversion design.

Does a 30-pin connector mean two panels are compatible?

No. Pin assignment, voltage, interface protocol, channel or lane configuration and backlight controls can differ.

Is 1000 cd/m² always required outdoors?

No. Readability depends on ambient light, reflection, cover glass, bonding, contrast, dimming and thermal design as well as panel luminance.

What should be supplied for a useful selection review?

Send the original model, rear-label photos, controller and cable details, enclosure limits, brightness, temperature, quantity, destination and delivery target.
