What protection levels are required for industrial LCD screens?

Date:2025-11-28

The protection level of industrial LCD screens is usually indicated by the IP (Ingress Protection) code, which directly affects the stability and lifespan of the screen in harsh industrial environments.

The table below provides a detailed explanation of the specific meanings of the two digits in the IP code, which can be used to quickly determine the protection capability of the LCD screen.

Understand the IP protection level

Level

Dustproof (first digit)

Level

Waterproof (second digit)

0

Without protection

0

Without protection

1

Prevent solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 50mm (such as palms)

1

Prevent vertically falling water droplets

2

Prevent solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 12.5mm (such as fingers)

2

Prevent water droplets from falling vertically when the shell tilts 15 degrees

3

Prevent solid foreign objects (such as tools) with a diameter of ≥ 2.5mm

3

Prevent water spraying at a 60 degree angle to the vertical direction

4

Prevent solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 1.0mm (such as small wires)

4

Prevent splashing water from any direction

5

Dustproof, although it cannot completely prevent dust from entering, the amount of entry does not affect the operation of the equipment

5

Prevent low-pressure water spray from any direction

6

Completely dust-proof, dust cannot enter

6

Prevent high-pressure water spray from any direction (such as violent waves)

7

Prevent short-term immersion in water (1 meter deep, 30 minutes)

8

Prevent continuous immersion in water under specified pressure

9K

Prevent high temperature and high pressure steam cleaning

How to choose protection levels for different scenarios

After understanding the meaning of levels, you can choose according to the actual application environment:

Conventional indoor and commercial environments (such as offices, self-service kiosks, indoor ticket booths)

These scenes have little dust and no risk of direct water spray. Usually, an IP54 rated screen is sufficient, which can effectively prevent dust accumulation and splashing water from any direction, ensuring stable operation of the equipment.

Ordinary industries and high flow environments (such as production workshops, food and beverage production lines, hospitals, transportation hubs)

These environments have a lot of dust and may come into contact with liquids or require frequent cleaning. It is recommended to choose an IP65 rated screen, which can completely prevent dust from entering and can be rinsed with a low-pressure water column, suitable for daily cleaning and maintenance. IP65 is a common choice in light industrial environments.

Adverse industrial and outdoor environments (such as outdoor equipment, mines, ports, ships, or food and pharmaceutical workshops that often require deep cleaning)

Under these more stringent conditions, a higher level of protection is required.

IP67: It can withstand the spray of high-pressure water column and short-term immersion, and is suitable for outdoor, ship cabin and other environments that may encounter rainstorm or temporary immersion.

IP68: capable of long-term immersion under specified pressure, suitable for underwater equipment or specific harsh environments.

IP69K: capable of withstanding high temperature and high pressure steam cleaning, designed specifically for industries with strict hygiene and cleaning requirements such as food and pharmaceuticals

In addition to IP rating, it is also important to pay attention to these

When choosing an industrial LCD screen, IP rating is key, but not the only factor. In order to make the device more durable, you also need to pay attention to the following points:

Wide temperature operation: Ensure that the screen can operate in extreme temperatures of the on-site environment, such as industrial grade screens that may support a wide temperature range of -40 ℃ to 85 ℃.

Seismic and impact resistance: In environments with significant transportation or vibration (such as vehicles and mining machinery), screens need to have good seismic and impact resistance capabilities.

Touch technology: In some situations where gloves are required for operation or the screen surface is prone to wear, the adaptability of surface hardness (such as 7H tempered glass) and touch technology (such as PCAP projected capacitive touch screen, supporting glove operation) needs to be considered.

Backlight lifespan: The backlight lifespan of industrial display screens is usually required to reach 50000 hours or more to ensure long-term reliability.

I hope the above information can help you make an accurate choice. If you can tell me which device or environment the LCD screen will be used in, I can provide you with more specific advice.
