Screen diagonal, active area and module outline
- Screen diagonal
- The distance from one corner of the image area to the opposite corner. This is the measurement behind the screen-size label.
- Active area
- The width and height of the area that displays the image. This does not include the surrounding frame.
- Module outline
- The panel assembly's external dimensions, including its frame. Use the mechanical drawing for thickness, mounting points, connector position and any projecting parts. A touch cover or complete monitor housing has its own dimensions.
Does resolution determine a 7-inch screen's physical size?
No. A value such as 800 × 480 or 1024 × 600 describes the pixel count, not the module's width and height in millimeters. Pixel dimensions and the physical image-area ratio must also be known. Do not assume a pixel-count ratio is the physical aspect ratio unless square pixels have been established.
For installation, read the active-area specification and outline drawing for the exact model and revision. There is no single module size that can safely be assigned to every 7-inch display of a given resolution.
How to check dimensions before ordering a replacement
- Identify the panel. Record the complete model number and suffix from the label, and obtain the matching datasheet and mechanical drawing.
- Check the visible opening. Compare the active area and bezel opening with the equipment's viewing window. Treat touch-cover dimensions separately.
- Check the installation envelope. Confirm outline width, height, thickness, mounting features, connector location and cable clearance.
- Check more than size. Verify the interface, pinout, power, timing and backlight requirements. A shared diagonal does not establish electrical or mechanical compatibility.
Common questions about 7-inch screen size
Is a 7-inch screen 7 inches wide?
No. The size label refers to the diagonal. In the exact 7-inch, 16:9 example above, the width is approximately 6.10 inches, not 7 inches.
Are 7 inch and 7.0 inch different sizes?
The written numbers have the same value. Product labels alone still do not establish identical active areas, module outlines or mounting dimensions.
What changes if the screen is used in portrait?
The diagonal is unchanged. The landscape width and height exchange roles when the panel is rotated; mounting and cable requirements still need to be checked.

For diagonal D and physical aspect ratio a:b, width = D * a / sqrt(a*a + b*b) and height = D * b / sqrt(a*a + b*b). Here, * means multiplication and sqrt means square root. The table uses D = 7 inches. Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimeters or 25.4 for millimeters.
